Piercing the CloudsGregor Kregar Drawing on utopian ideas of architecture and constructivist impulses to merge art and life, Kregar will consider the possibility of moving cities from the earth's surface into the air through reflectedsurfaces.
Complex geometric sculptures constructed with triangulated forms of mirrored stainless steel together with photographs and videos of clouds, create a refracted collage of overlapping skies in the Tin Sheds gallery. For Kregar, sculpture is not just something to observe, often combining scale, materials and sound to remind the perceiver of their bodies...'much of my sculpture, including this work, is meant to trigger ideas and get people thinking and talking about how we use space - to think about why we build what we build...' Piercing the Clouds will serve as an urban model for a floating metropolis posing a unique solution for lack of housing and overpopulation of cities. Born in Slovenia, Kregar completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1996 followed in 1999 by an MFA from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, New Zealand. Having completed the Art Residency, Art Omni New York in 2007, Kregar's next project Reflective Lullaby, will be installed at the Melbourne Art Fair, Victoria. Kregar lives in New Zealand and is represented by Michael Reid at Elizabeth Bay. Image: Gregor Kregar, Piercing the Clouds, study for photographs |
