School and Teacher Programs

The Biennale of Sydney has worked closely with the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art to develop educational programs directed at students and teachers. These events include Teacher Preview Evenings and Secondary Study Mornings at the AGNSW and MCA as well as a guided Teachers' Tour through Pier 2/3 and Cockatoo Island (see details below).

Join Biennale Public Programs and Education manager, Dr Dougal Phillips, for insights into the the process and challenges of developing site-specific works for these unique venues. Tristan Sharp (Senior Coordinator of Education programs, AGNSW) and Justine McLisky (MCA Learning Coordinator Schools and Family Programs) will discuss teaching strategies and Stage 6 Case Study development. This tour includes a ferry trip from Pier 2/3 to Cockatoo Island. In combination with the AGNSW and MCA teacher previews, this tour will provide a model for your own Biennale experience.

A partnership program between The Biennale of Sydney, Art Gallery of NSW and Museum of Contemporary Art. Spaces are limited so bookings are essential.

Join 2008 Biennale's artistic director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev and artist Ross Gibson to discuss the curatorial concept and Gibson's art-making practice. Followed by an audience Q & A.

Revolutionary art - art for revolution (Years 9-12)
25 & 27 June, 22, 24 & 30 July, 5 & 8 August, 10.30-11.30am

Unpack the Revolutions - Forms That Turn, its key themes and artworks. Consider the curatorial selection of historical and contemporary artists and the dialogue created between artist and audience. Examine the deliberate choice of the Gallery as a venue for these artists, and the challenges they present.

AGNSW Biennale of Sydney Secondary Discussion tour (Years 7-12)
Duration: 1 hour
Cost: $127.50 per group of 15 students or less

Revolt in the Biennale: revolving, rotating, mirroring, repeating, reversing, turning upside down or inside out are some of the Biennale's themes, but also fun and useful strategies to decode and interpret contemporary art. Confront key artworks, develop these skills and consider the impulse of artists to ‘revolt' against systems and structures.
