Stuck together in a small vessel, Thai media artists must work together to stay afloat. At the same time they are also trying to out-live one another. While lost at sea, they are waving and screaming in order to get any kind of attention hoping to be rescued. Some of them are fortunate and have been ‘scooped up’ by a passing European liner. The rest of them can only watch and hold on to what they have – their talent, their pride and their hopes.” Michael Shaowanasai

Lifeboat #2551 is curated by one of Thailand’s key contemporary artists, Michael Shaowanasai. It brings together a cross generational mix of media artists from Thailand.

Join Michael Shaowanasai for a Roundtable discussion (Saturday 14 June, 2pm) and Curator's Talk (Saturday 21 June, 2pm) as Lifeboat #2551 docks in Sydney.

Fears of a Jadded Descent

Vienna Parreno

During an artist residency in Beijing, Vienna Parreño chanced upon a history of Chinese emperors who constructed their tombs out of jade and gold thread. Parreño has constructed an installation out of large red paintbrushes suspended from the ceiling – stopping only a few breathtaking inches above the floor.

The Hong Kong Agent

Robert Iolini (presented in association with d/Lux/MediaArts as part of the Nightvision series: sunset to sunrise video projections)

“When space becomes a rare commodity, the handheld device is a means for the individual to personalise almost any public space.” Robert Iolini
The Hong Kong Agent is an intimate and poetic exploration of contemporary Hong Kong culture. It is an edgy work which replicates the vitality and innovation of an ultra future/retrio megapolis. Screened on the front window of Gallery 4A, it also has a bluetooth component which allows passers-by to download 10 micro-sodes of The Hong Kong Agent to their mobile phones, MP3 players and other handheld devices. The 10 micro-sodes can be collected and ‘mashed’ to the user’s delight.

ARTIST TALK Robert Iolini on Wednesday 18 June, 5pm
